Hand Stripping
Preserving the Coat Nature Intended
What Is Hand Stripping
Hand stripping is a specialized grooming technique used for wire-coated and harsh-textured breeds. Unlike clipping, which cuts the hair shaft and leaves dead hair in the follicle, hand stripping removes the dead outer guard hairs entirely from the root. This allows a fresh, healthy, and correctly textured coat to grow in its place.
For wire coated breeds, clipping is not simply a shortcut. It permanently alters the coat. Over time a clipped wire coat becomes soft, faded, and loses the natural hardness and rich color it was bred to have. Hand stripping is the only method that preserves the coat's true texture, natural color, and protective qualities.
Who Is Hand Stripping For?

Hand stripping is specifically suited for wire coated and harsh textured breeds. At Zen Pet Spa, we currently work with Border Terriers, Cairn Terriers, and Brussels Griffons, and we are actively expanding our education to include Welsh Terriers and additional breeds. Every hand stripping appointment begins with a coat assessment to ensure your dog is a good candidate and that the coat is ready to be worked.
Not every wire coated dog is a suitable candidate for hand stripping. Factors such as age, health, coat condition, and whether the dog has previously been clipped all play a role. We will always be honest with you about what we can and cannot do for your dog.
Understanding The Two Types Of Hand Stripping?
This is where most owners get confused, and it is one of the most important things to understand before booking.
The Full Strip — Every 8 to 12 Weeks
A full strip is performed when the coat has fully grown out and all of the guard hairs are at the end of their growth cycle, also known as being blown or ripe. At this stage the entire topcoat is removed at once, and the coat restarts its full growth cycle. This is typically performed every 8 to 12 weeks and must only be done when the coat is genuinely ready. Stripping too early is uncomfortable for the dog and damaging to the follicle. Waiting too long allows the coat to become over blown, making it harder to remove and harder on the dog.
The Rolled Coat — Every 2 to 4 Weeks
Rolling the coat is a maintenance method where only the oldest and ripest guard hairs are removed at each visit, a little at a time. This creates overlapping layers of coat at different stages of growth, meaning the dog always has a full, well maintained coat and never goes through the naked look of a freshly stripped dog. A rolled coat requires consistent appointments every two to four weeks. This is considered the gold standard for pet maintenance and is what we work toward building with every hand stripping client at Zen Pet Spa.
The key takeaway is this: hand stripping is not a twice a year service. It is a commitment to a regular grooming routine that, when done correctly and consistently, becomes easier on the dog and more rewarding with every visit.
Our Approach
Amber and Frank both perform hand stripping at Zen Pet Spa and are deeply committed to doing this work the right way. We limit each hand stripping session to two hours out of respect for the dog's comfort and tolerance. If a session requires more time, we schedule a follow up appointment within two days to complete the work. As we build a relationship with your dog over time, most appointments will flow naturally within a single visit.
We are specialists in training, not generalists claiming to do everything. Our current expertise is in Border Terriers, Cairn Terriers, and Brussels Griffons, and we are actively growing that list with the same intentional approach we bring to everything at Zen Pet Spa.
